You spent hours on that last piece. Don't break it back down. A finished jigsaw puzzle can go on the wall like any other art print, and it only takes a few supplies. Here's how to glue, mount and frame a puzzle so it lasts.
What You'll Need
- Puzzle glue (sold at most craft stores), or clear-drying craft glue
- A wide, flat applicator, like a foam brush or an old gift card
- Wax paper or parchment paper
- A backing board: foam board or mat board cut slightly larger than your puzzle
- A frame that fits your finished puzzle size
Step 1: Finish on a Flat Surface You Can Leave Alone
Slide wax paper under the puzzle before you start gluing so it won't stick to your table. If you built it somewhere else, carefully slide a thin board or poster board under it to move it.
Step 2: Press It Flat
Run a rolling pin or your palm over the whole puzzle to seat every piece evenly. Gaps and raised pieces show up in the final frame.
Step 3: Glue the Front
Pour a small amount of glue in the center and spread a thin, even layer out to the edges, working it into the seams between pieces. Thin coats are better than thick ones. Let it dry completely (check your glue's label for timing), then add a second coat if you want extra strength.
Step 4: Mount It
Once it's dry, flip the puzzle onto your backing board and attach it with glue or double-sided tape. This keeps it from bending inside the frame.
Step 5: Frame It
Measure your finished puzzle and pick a frame to match. For reference, Puzzled By Art puzzles finish at:
- 500 and 1000 piece puzzles: 24 x 18 inches
- 100 piece kids' puzzle: 19 x 13 inches
An 18 x 24 inch poster frame is a standard size at most frame shops and big-box stores. Add a mat if you want a gallery look, but size the frame up to fit it.
